Vermont's Total Solar Eclipse: April 8, 2024


On April 8, 2024 Vermont will experience its first total solar eclipse in nearly a century. This guide will enhance the viewer’s experience of this singular event.

The booklet features a commemorative page for family, friends, and other eclipse viewers to record their signatures and comments, memorializing the day for posterity. The event guide includes one pair of safety glasses,     and detailed instructions for safe viewing of the eclipse, as well as the following: 

  • Timetables for more than two dozen Vermont cities and towns 
  • A clear and simple explanation of a solar eclipse, a brief history of the phenomenon, including Vermont’s last total solar eclipse (1932)
  • A guide to various visual optical effects of the eclipse, like “the diamond ring” or “Baily’s Beads
  • QR codes / links to the National Solar Observatory’s own interactive, solar "eclipse simulator." With this the user can link their computer, notebook, or phone for an eclipse simulation at any location within the state.
