Written in short stories, this novel is based on the author's experience being a soldier in Vietnam. The title not only refers to the things that soldiers carry physically such as their weapons and other meaningful objects specific to each soldier, but also refers to the  mental images and feelings that they have to carry with them as they partake in the war. While controversial and a bit hard to read at times due to the description of war and fighting surrounding the characters, The Things They Carried is an important book to read. Not only does it shed light on the struggles and hardships of soldiers, and show the humanity that can be found in the men, but it’s also a moving story that I found hard to put down.
