As gripping as her earlier books.  Lahiri recounts the tale of two brothers, Subhash and Udayan, who are extreme opposites.  Set first in Calcutta in the 1960s.  Udayan is drawn to the rebellious Naxalite movement.  Subhash pursues a scientific research career in the United States.  Subhash returns to India to pick up the pieces of his family, and takes Gauri to the United States, raising his brother's child as his own.  Complex characters.
