Pride Readathon 2024

Saturday, June 1, 2024 (All day) to Sunday, June 30, 2024 (All day)
Event address:
191 Bank Street
Burlington, VT 05401

Phoenix Books is thrilled to join Bear Pond Books and other Indie Bookstores throughout Vermont to host the 2nd Annual Pride Readathon for the entire month of June!

In the past two years, school and public libraries faced more than 2,500 attempted book bans. These reactionary bans overwhelmingly target books by and about BIPOC and LGBTQ+ people, revealing a bid to erase us from shelves nationwide. When you seek out marginalized authors and stories, you’re fighting back against erasure and contributing to a world that embraces ALL voices, stories, and people. Let’s read, Vermont!

Enjoy reading as many books by LGBTQ+ authors as you can and raise money for Outright Vermont’s Camp Outright: a summer camp with a queer twist! We’re excited for you to join us alongside partnering indie bookstores across the state.

 How does the Readathon work?

1.     Set a goal for the number of books by LGBTQ+ authors you will read during Pride Month (June).

2.    Click the "Get Reading" link on this page to create a fundraising page to share:
  • Your reading goal
  • Why reading books by LGBTQ+ authors is important to you
  • Which books you chose and why

3. Share your personal page with your friends and family via email or social media, encouraging them to support your reading goal with a tax-deductible, online gift. All funds raised will go directly ro supporting Camp Outright.

4. Start reading!

 What do I read?

What you read is up to you! Graphic novels, fantasy, romance, memoir, anything goes, as long as it celebrates an LGBTQ+ author’s voice!

Why Camp Outright as the beneficiary of this Pride event?

All kids deserve to have access to safe and inclusive spaces that support their self-discovery and encourage connection. At Camp Outright, campers experience a sense of belonging, where their identity is a superpower - a source of inner strength - that's celebrated, embraced, and powers them through life. Your support ensures that no camper is turned away because of financial need.

A local therapist shared: "Camp Outright did more for my client in a week than I've been able to do in a whole year."

Swimming, sports, nature workshops, tie-dye t’s, fashion shows, and a big dance on the last night set the stage for friendships to form and new talents to emerge. Oh, yeah - there’s lots of reading, too! Like a good book, Camp Outright is an escape from everyday struggles and a chance to live in a world full of possibility.

“Probably the most positive experience I’ve had in my life was being at Camp. It was easy to just be there and exist, which we often can’t do at home or school. You can just go to camp and be gay and make friends, and that’s very nice.”    - Camp Outright Youth

Thank you so much for being a part of the 2024 Pride Readathon!

We can't wait to see what you're reading!
