Picture Books for Grown-Ups

Event date:
Wednesday, October 25, 2017 - 6:00pm

Calling all grown-ups! You’re really never too old for a picture book. Join Kate Sullivan and Katrina Kruse to explore this genre. Light fare will be provided.

ABOUT THE EVENT: A picture book is more than just a book, and for more people than just children. A picture book can be a greeting card, a little larger and a little bit more of an investment--but unlike a card it can have a very long life, and can be shared too. They are often the perfect gift for a friend’s celebration, a life change or a time of need. You can even buy picture books for yourself.
There are times when we all need to be reminded what it’s like to deal with a bully, to be nervous, that it’s ok to have feelings, and sometimes we  just need a laugh. Picture books provide this, in what you might call the “perfect package” filled with art and literature. And they get right to the point.
Kate Sullivan, Katrina Kruse, and booksellers from Phoenix Books will introduce you to books for these occasions and more, from Random House, Hachette, and several other publishers, and you’ll leave with some great new gift ideas for the holiday season and beyond.

Kate Sullivan (right) has been in love with books as long as she can remember—first at home, then at the public library. She even thought about being a librarian for a while. After college she worked in a bookstore for a few years, and eventually her first sales rep job was selling books for grownups. Within a few years a sales job came open at Random House Children’s and she realized what she really wanted to be selling and sharing with kids and adults. That was 30 years ago, and she still believes she has one of the best jobs in the world. A special passion of hers is Picture Books – it’s amazing how much you can see, say and feel with only 32 pages, a few words and some lovely art. In this program Kate will explain why Children’s Picture Books are so special and why they can be read and enjoyed and shared with our fellow grown-ups as well as with children.

Katrina Kruse (left) graduated with a degree in Elementary education when there were no teaching jobs to be had, so she followed her book loving dream and started working at the Boston University Bookstore. Since then, she has worked with computer books (too dry), in adult book marketing at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (too limiting), and is now the New England sales rep for Hachette (just right!!!!). She believes a great book is a great book whether it has pictures or 1200 pages.  Mostly she just loves to share the joy of great books!
