An Evening with Stephen Russell Payne: You Were Always There

Thursday, September 29, 2022 - 7:00pm
Event address:
191 Bank Street
Burlington, VT 05401

“Peopled with characters that openly disdain the postcard Vermont, the stories of Stephen Russell Payne plumb the depths of rural hardship, farm life, and small dreams. Thanks to Payne’s unerring eye for detail and ear for voice, these stories turn modest lives into treasure, by revealing the tenderness that makes them possible.”— Stephen Kiernan, author of Universe of Two

Please join us at Phoenix Books Burlington for an evening with New England author Stephen Russell Payne to celebrate the release of his latest novel, You Were Always There

About the book:  You Were Always There is an unforgettable coming-of-age story set on beautiful Caspian Lake in Greensboro, Vermont. Taking us through the turbulent 1970s, this novel speaks powerfully to the complex societal upheaval the world is experiencing today. Luke Simms, a local farm boy, and Sarah Clements, a gifted violinist and daughter of a powerful federal judge, unexpectedly meet and fall in love, dramatically changing the rest of their lives and the lives of those around them.
Dealing poignantly with love, loss, and redemption, this novel is a thought-provoking, uplifting journey through the lives of remarkable people who struggle with the same kaleidoscope of
hopes and fears that we do. Captivating from the opening scene, this book is simply impossible to put down.

About the author: Stephen Russell Payne is a fourth generation native of Vermont’s legendary Northeast Kingdom, holding degrees from Tufts University and the University of Vermont College of Medicine, where he is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery. Formerly a deputy sheriff for Caledonia County, he has practiced surgery in Vermont for over 30 years. He is the author of the novels Cliff Walking and Life on a Cliff, Ties That Bind Us-A Collection of Vermont Short Stories, and Riding My Guitar – The Rick Norcross Story. He also wrote for many years for Vermont Life magazine and other periodicals.
