Wow, wow, WOW!! I cannot praise this enough! The Kao takes everything you love about the "Magical Girl" trope from franchises like Sailor Moon or Madoka Magica and uses it as a tool to explore gender & identity. Having a trans man as the “Magical Boy” was such a fresh, natural twist to the classic formula. I had such a blast reading this!
This is a great young adult romance for people who don't usually enjoy romance! Cath, an introverted college freshmen, struggles to navigate this new stage in her life, this time without her twin sister Wren by her side. Cath has to balance making new friends, attending her writing courses, and updating her Simon Snow fanfiction in a wonderful coming of age story. I cannot shout out my love for this book loud enough!
I love this series so much! They're a perfect blend of romance, magic, and adventure with a wonderful subversive twist on "The Chosen One" trope. This trilogy covers the whole scope of romantic relationships from the "falling in love" stage to the more difficult "staying in love" phase. You'll be cheering for Simon and Baz from start to finish. Great for fans of Harry Potter and other magic academia tales!
I cannot put into words how adorable and beautiful this book is. This might be the prettiest graphic novel I've ever read. The magic and adventure are fun, the friendship and budding romance between Beetle and Kat is endearing, and I want a few of these panels hung on my wall as prints! Great for fans of Harry Potter or The Nightmare Before Christmas!
This might be my favorite graphic novel of 2021! Area 51 is home to a group of orphaned "irregularities" -- creatures of myth and legend who are believed to not exist. This book has nods to familiar creatures like Yeti's, reptilians, selkies, and even Bigfoot himself! A found family story about acceptance and self-love.
Junji Ito, one of the most beloved horror writers in Japan, is known for his special blend of psychological, supernatural, and body horror as well as intricately designed illustrations. This one hooked me in the first chapter, then gave me nightmares for two days. You'll never look at spirals the same way again: this will delight and disgust you in the best possible way!
This book is adorably awkward. It's full of gay panic and closeted teenage shenanigans from a concerned parent's point of view. The love and acceptance from the parental figures in this book is so heartwarming to watch. A light, fun read!
This book is powerful. This is a heavy story about revenge, forgiveness, and acceptance in equal measure. This is about loss, love, and a search for identity with a dash of romance. Felix's story resonated with me so strongly that it became my favorite book I read in 2021. This is a queer coming-of-age book you can't miss.
The Wytte twins are prodigies -- the youngest in a family of powerful witches. After they miss the school bus, the twins set out to hunt for private mentor instead. But their escapades quickly force them to face dastardly plots beyond their control; plots that turn their whole world upside down. I read this whole book in 1 day, I literally could not put it down. Full of heart and masterful storytelling, I give this a full five out of five stars!
This is my favorite book to date. Ponyboy struggles to make sense of himself and the world around him amidst poverty and constant social hierarchy. Ponyboy and his "Greaser" family are constantly struggling against the upper-middle class "Soc's" until the tension finally snaps and Pony's friend makes a life-altering choice. This is a story about the love between found family that withstands anything that threatens to tear them apart. Brutally honest and heartbreakingly moving, this book will grip you and never let go.
