Travels in the World of Ideas with Peter Gilbert (In Partnership with Wind Ridge Publishing) (Burlington)

“In what appears to be a paradox, Americans may have become more opinionated and yet less confident in their capacity to think for themselves. Could that be in part because Americans are reading less? And engaging less with the world of ideas?”

So asks Vermont Humanities Council executive director Peter A. Gilbert in the introduction to this collection of over sixty lively essays, which are adapted from his frequent commentaries broadcast originally on Vermont Public Radio. A perfect book for anyone who enjoys ideas and who loves learning.

100% of author’s earnings from the sale of this book will benefit the Vermont Humanities Council.

Peter A. Gilbert has been Executive Director of the Vermont Humanities Council since 2002, and Robert Frost’s literary executor since 1992.  A graduate of Dartmouth College, Georgetown University Law Center, and the University of Virginia, he was previously Senior Assistant to the President and Associate Provost at Dartmouth College, a litigator at the Boston law firm of Hale and Dorr, and a faculty member at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts.  He is a frequent commentator on Vermont Public Radio.  He lives in Montpelier, Vermont with his wife, Cindy Char, and their two daughters.

This is part of a series of events with Wind Ridge Publishing authors taking place at Phoenix Books Burlington this fall. WRP authors are all local residents; however, their books reflect a broad range of issues, experience, and global interests—from Green Mountain Coffee Roasters’ Rick Peyser and Bill Mares’ in Brewing Change, Peyser’s personal account of social responsibility and the lives of coffee farmers, to Vermont wildlife rehabilitator Helena Nicolay’s Squirrel Diaries and Shelburne veterinarian Dr. Steven Metz’s book, Exotic Tails. Other featured WRP releases include VPR commentaries from the Executive Director of the Vermont Humanities Council, Peter Gilbert’s I Was Thinking and Paul Boisvert’s photo essays in his coffee table book, Burlington ~ A Sense of Place.

You re a smart guy. You read The Perfect Storm and now you find yourself living it. Your daughter, who yesterday was happy to hang out with you at Home Depot, now cries for no known reason. Last week you were her soccer coach and the best dad there ever was, really, and today on the way home from practice she turned away and stared sadly out the window and wouldn t say a word to you. She s hovering around adolescence and all of a sudden you re flopping on the daddy-deck in a panic. What the heck is about to happen and how are you going to get through this? How can you help her get through these difficult years when honestly, you don t totally understand it yourself? If you re a single dad, it can get all the more complicated. You might not know who or where to go to for the real deal, the inside scoop. When did her body start to change? Where the heck do you buy a training bra, and when? Do you have to take her or can you pay someone else to do it? What about dating? Or the girl clique thing you ve heard about. Can t you just ignore it and raise her just like you would a son, just like you were raised?

But Dad! is for any man raising a tween or teen daughter, but particularly the single man who does or doesn t have full-time custody. This is the definitive guide to helping dad and daughter get past survive and onto thrive. Written for any man raising daughters, the authors geared this book for the single dad who may not have a woman in his life with whom to confer about issues their daughters may be facing like sex, friendships, boyfriends, alcohol and drugs, and personal hygiene. This book covers it all, from what to keep stocked in the bathroom to how to talk about sex without being blown off. Thomas Visser - Porches of North America (Burlington)

Join Thomas Visser for a slide presentation and discussion of that quintessentially American architectural feature - the porch. This is a joint event with Preservation Burlington.

The porch, whether simple or grand, evokes feelings of welcome, comfort, and nostalgia in all of us, yet there has been little published on the history of this omnipresent architectural feature. Thomas Visser's new book examines how porches in their many forms have evolved in the United States and Canada through innovations, adaptations, and revivals. Covering formal porches and verandas, as well as the many informal vernacular types, he proffers insights into broad cultural customs and patterns, as well as regional preferences and usage.
All those who love to while away afternoons on a favorite porch will find this architectural history delightful as well as informative.

Thomas Durant Visser is an associate professor and director of the Historic Preservation Program at the University of Vermont and is the author of Field Guide to New England Barns and Farm Buildings.

Sharry Underwood: No Daughter of Mine is Going to Be a Dancer! (Burlington)

Ever wondered about the romance and glamour of the life of a performer in 1940s America? Join us to get the inside scoop when we welcome local author Sharry Traver Underwood to our store. Underwood's fun and inspiring memoir, No Daughter of Mine is Going to Be a Dancer!, details her pursuit of a dancing career during the 40s.

From the Foreword by Deborah Jowitt:
In her tale of a dancer's life, Underwood reveals both the rapture she felt in dancing and her refreshingly spunky approach to a career. Over the decade, this young woman -- experiencing a wide range of performing styles and training techniques -- matured and developed as an artist and a person. Her reminiscences, written in the vivid prose style she cultivated in her mature years as a dance critic in Burlington, Vermont (where for decades she also performed, choreographed, and ran a company), she provides an illuminating view of theater and dance during the war and the immediate postwar years.
