But Dad! A Survival Guide from Patricia Livingston and Gretchen Gross (Burlington)

You re a smart guy. You read The Perfect Storm and now you find yourself living it. Your daughter, who yesterday was happy to hang out with you at Home Depot, now cries for no known reason. Last week you were her soccer coach and the best dad there ever was, really, and today on the way home from practice she turned away and stared sadly out the window and wouldn t say a word to you. She s hovering around adolescence and all of a sudden you re flopping on the daddy-deck in a panic. What the heck is about to happen and how are you going to get through this? How can you help her get through these difficult years when honestly, you don t totally understand it yourself? If you re a single dad, it can get all the more complicated. You might not know who or where to go to for the real deal, the inside scoop. When did her body start to change? Where the heck do you buy a training bra, and when? Do you have to take her or can you pay someone else to do it? What about dating? Or the girl clique thing you ve heard about. Can t you just ignore it and raise her just like you would a son, just like you were raised?

But Dad! is for any man raising a tween or teen daughter, but particularly the single man who does or doesn t have full-time custody. This is the definitive guide to helping dad and daughter get past survive and onto thrive. Written for any man raising daughters, the authors geared this book for the single dad who may not have a woman in his life with whom to confer about issues their daughters may be facing like sex, friendships, boyfriends, alcohol and drugs, and personal hygiene. This book covers it all, from what to keep stocked in the bathroom to how to talk about sex without being blown off. The authors help dads gain a better sense of what their daughters are going through, how their bodies are changing, how their relationships are changing, and how best to handle the ups and downs of these challenging years.

Social Media is Bullsh*t, with B. J. Mendelson (Burlington)

Journalist and social critic B.J. Mendelson will skillfully debunk the myths of social media. He'll illustrate how the notion of "social media" first came to prominence, why it has become such a powerful presence in the marketing field, and who stands to benefit each time it's touted in the press. Discover why all the Facebook friends and Twitter followers in the world mean nothing to you and your business without old-fashioned, real-world connections. Examine popular tales of social media "success," and the unsettling truths behind the surface. Learn how to best harness the potential of the Internet--without spending a fortune in the process. This book gives the knowledge and tools you "really" need to connect with customers and grow your brand.

BJ Mendelson has contributed to The Huffington Post, Forbes, MTV's O Music Awards, and CNN. He has been quoted by Newsweek, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Psychology Today, and Smart Money Magazine, has been a new media director for a syndicated ABC television show, and wrote a college survival column for CBS College Sports.

Thomas Visser - Porches of North America (Burlington)

Join Thomas Visser for a slide presentation and discussion of that quintessentially American architectural feature - the porch. This is a joint event with Preservation Burlington.

The porch, whether simple or grand, evokes feelings of welcome, comfort, and nostalgia in all of us, yet there has been little published on the history of this omnipresent architectural feature. Thomas Visser's new book examines how porches in their many forms have evolved in the United States and Canada through innovations, adaptations, and revivals. Covering formal porches and verandas, as well as the many informal vernacular types, he proffers insights into broad cultural customs and patterns, as well as regional preferences and usage.
All those who love to while away afternoons on a favorite porch will find this architectural history delightful as well as informative.

Thomas Durant Visser is an associate professor and director of the Historic Preservation Program at the University of Vermont and is the author of Field Guide to New England Barns and Farm Buildings.

Sharry Underwood: No Daughter of Mine is Going to Be a Dancer! (Burlington)

Ever wondered about the romance and glamour of the life of a performer in 1940s America? Join us to get the inside scoop when we welcome local author Sharry Traver Underwood to our store. Underwood's fun and inspiring memoir, No Daughter of Mine is Going to Be a Dancer!, details her pursuit of a dancing career during the 40s.

From the Foreword by Deborah Jowitt:
In her tale of a dancer's life, Underwood reveals both the rapture she felt in dancing and her refreshingly spunky approach to a career. Over the decade, this young woman -- experiencing a wide range of performing styles and training techniques -- matured and developed as an artist and a person. Her reminiscences, written in the vivid prose style she cultivated in her mature years as a dance critic in Burlington, Vermont (where for decades she also performed, choreographed, and ran a company), she provides an illuminating view of theater and dance during the war and the immediate postwar years.

PROMISED (Roaring Brook Press, October 2, 2012) is the much-anticipated conclusion to Caragh M. O’Brien’s Birthmarked trilogy. Inspired by a road trip through a southern drought, the series takes place in a dystopian, post-climate change America. The first two books, Birthmarked and Prized, have been praised for their strong heroine and well-drawn futuristic world of hierarchy, codes and secrets.
Birthmarked introduces sixteen-year-old midwife Gaia Stone, who lives outside of the wall that separates the elite Enclave from the rest of the world. She and her mother must deliver a quota of three infants every month to the Enclave. But when Gaia’s parents are brutally taken away by the Enclave, Gaia’s assumptions about the “perfect” city beyond the wall are turned upside-down. In Prized, Gaia is taken captive by the matriarchal society of Sylum, a city where women rule the men who drastically outnumber them, and a kiss is a crime. Gaia must make choices around loyalty and love while she fights to simply survive.
PROMISED brings together the worlds of the first two books. After defying the ruthless Enclave, surviving the wasteland, and upending the rigid matriarchy of Sylum, Gaia Stone now faces her biggest challenge ever. She must lead the people of Sylum back to the Enclave and persuade the Protectorat to grant them refuge from the wasteland. In Gaia's absence, the Enclave has grown more cruel, more desperate to experiment on mothers from outside the wall, and now the stakes of cooperating or rebelling have never been higher. Is Gaia ready, as a leader, to sacrifice what--or whom--she loves most?

Eat Local with Abigail Gehring: Demo on Making Yogurt Cheese & Self-Sufficiency Q&A (Burlington)

Celebrate local food with Vermont's own self-sufficiency maven! Abigail will bring homemade crackers for you to sample, and will demonstrate how to make yogurt cheese. Then, there will be plenty of time for questions and book signing.

Abigail R. Gehring, author of The Ultimate Self-Sufficiency Handbook and many other Green Living titles, may be the face of the new self-reliance revolution: just like the movement itself, she does not confine herself to either the rural or urban environment (she splits her time between New York City and Windham, Vermont) and she has equally firm footing in both the traditional (she was home-schooled in Vermont) and the modern (“organic” and “green” are not just buzzwords to her).

Abigail is the author or editor of Back to Basics, Homesteading, Self-Sufficiency, The Back to Basics Handbook, The Homesteading Handbook, and The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Country Living. She’s practiced self-sufficient living since her childhood in Vermont, being home-schooled, home-canning jams and jellies, and enjoying natural crafts. She divides her time between New York City and Windham, Vermont.

Tea Leaves has been nominated for inclusion in the 2012 ALA list of notable LGBT Books and is featured by the Lambda Literary Foundation’s Literary Book Club. The review and reader’s guidelines can be found at

Tea Leaves tells the story of mothers and daughters, embarking when the narrator’s mother is diagnosed with fourth-stage cancer. A dutiful daughter, the narrator proceeds to take care of her mother, 74-year-old Jane, and enters a deeper understanding of her own life through her mother’s stories. Her grandmother (born in 1899) was a spinner in a textile mill and white glove wearing lady of her generation, her mother (born in 1920) was an office worker and feminist ahead of her time. The narrator has taken the foundation of her mother’s life and forged her own – taking her mother’s feminism one step further in becoming a lesbian and becoming the first in her family to graduate from college. Tea Leaves is a story of gender and class, identity and sexuality but, most of all, it is about love.
