In Fates and Furies, Lauren Groff clearly illustrates that despite the love and bond that two people hold, their stories can be vastly different. Sometimes it makes you wonder if one of characters was delusional, if the existing circumstances actually created the lives they shared together.

Lotto (Fates) came from a privileged family who paid for him to go to boarding school as well as college. The only challenge he faced was when his mother cut him off when he married Mathilde immediately after finishing college. His life almost seems too easy and perfect, making the reader wonder where the tragedy is in the book.

In the second half of the book (Furies) the reader follows Mathilde's side of the story and the secret life that she led prior to meeting Lotto. The life that Mathilde reveals is not the fateful life that that seemed to exist around Lotto. Ultimately, the nature of their marriage is revealed, leaving a lasting impression of the importance of perspective on life and marriage.
