Gilbert is one of the true masters of verse. His various modes of writing poems reveals the breadth of his singular talent. But it is the intensity of experience -- the poetry of a life lived -- where he truly shines. His collections are awesome!

A brilliant first-person account (eloquently told in the third-person point of view) of how the life of one of our greatest writers became transformed into a surreal nightmare following the call for his death by the Supreme Leader of Iran, in response to Rushdie's novel, which dealt with the interesting and little-known origins of Islam. Gripping and quite terrifying.

"The Pulitzer Prize winner returns with a powerful story cycle, told with his uniquely multifaceted melange of Dominican immigrant vernacular and nerdy teenage sci-fi lingo. The alluring voice of his narrator becomes the web; the narrative punch delivered by his prose becomes the spider. Watch out for the pinch at the heart of these stories."

"While Chabon's prose can soothe or startle, rock or roll like the improvisations of a journeyman jazz musician, the stylistic heights reached in his fiction become counterbalanced by the impressive depths of his thematic delving. Mix the genre-blending coolness of Quentin Tarantino with the dazzling linguistic playfulness of Vladimir Nabokov, and you begin to appreciate the fictional delights awaiting you in Chabon's latest social novel of race, history, heritage, and nostalgia set in the contemporary borderland of diversely populated Berkley and Oakland along the historic stretch of Telegraph Avenue."
