Lynn's Picks

Lynn started out life on Long Island (NY) moving to Vermont in 1989.  She's been a secretary, computer network administrator and a librarian at a small public library.  She tends to read a lot of new fiction, but will read anything from juvenile DCF books to biographies. However, she never, ever reads gory mysteries....shudder!  Lynn lives in Pittsford with her husband, teenage son, one beloved dog and two amazing cats.

This is not just a book about a man and his dog.  This is a book about life, loving, coping, grief, and oh so much more.  The message of the book builds and sneaks up on you subtly.  It is almost impossible to convey the impact of this book in words.  Much! Eye! Rain! at the end.  I strongly suggest that you read this book with your dog (or any pet) by your side as you will need to immediately tell them how much you love them and that you will always take care of them. Lily's message to the author and to everyone who reads this book:  "BE PRESENT IN THE MOMENT.  GIVE SPONTANEOUS AFFECTION."

A wonderful story told from a 12 year old's point of view.  Family, school, irish dancing, a magic fish and an sister who is a heroin addict.  Well written, emotional and uplifting.  The book enforces the message that love, family, good friends and neighbors help us all to survive and thrive.

I couldn't put it down.  I literally read the whole book on a train ride from Rutland to NYC (6 hours).  Family!  Money!  Friendships!  How quickly life goes by, then one day we wake up and realize we really didn't spend our time/money/love wisely.

From the 1960's to the present, Anna Quindlen tells the tale of the Miller Family.  It's not just a story about fighting for the right to keep their family land from being flooded by the government.  It's really a story about family and all it's intricate stories, secrets and desires.   I highly recommend for anyone who loves to read Anna Q.

Historical fiction, a mystery with many twists and turns, family dynamics, all wrapped around a lake house in England.  I have a weakness for abandoned houses and the descriptions of the landscape brought this novel to life.

Two outcasts, one being a dog.  How they relate to each other, to the world, to their need to survive and be loved for who they are, not what they look like.  Wonderfully written, sad yet heartwarming, I loved it so much I bought two copies to give as gifts.

You will want to clear out your closets, get a dumpster and reduce, reuse and recycle everything in your house.  As I was reading it I had to keep myself from jumping out of the chair to start tidying up.
