Phoenix Books’ events and marketing manager, Kristen has worked and traveled in Ireland, Italy, Maine, and Philadelphia, and has since returned home to Vermont. Kristen is a fan of nonfiction with an anthropological bent and of fiction authors who walk the line between fantasy and reality (e.g. Alice Hoffman and Neil Gaiman). She will forever be devoted to Terry Pratchett (and Granny Weatherwax). Since she completed an apprenticeship with herbalist Rosemary Gladstar, Kristen has informally adopted Phoenix's selection of books on herbalism.

Published: Hogarth - April 14th, 2015

Viper Wine is muscularly-written, cheekily but deliberately anachronistic, painstakingly researched tale of Venetia Stanley, a great beauty of 17th-century England.  It's a gorgeously-told page-turner full of invigorating language, a fascinating historical tale that deftly references modern ideas about beauty and relevance, and an unexpectedly touching story of vanity, decadence, and deceit.

Published: Katherine Tegen Books - March 24th, 2015

I loved this trilogy from the first, but it's only gotten better with the second and third books. The Urwald, a dangerous and magical forest, is vivid and wonderful. Jinx's quest - to save the Urwald from being logged by the people of a neighboring kingdom - is worthy and down to earth. Sage Blackwood's writing is insightful, vivid, and displays an enjoyably quirky sense of humor.

Published: Hogarth - March 31st, 2015

A beautifully composed and disarming book, The World Before Us is the story of Jane Standen, an archivist at a small London museum.  A happening when Jane was fifteen has left her haunted by guilt, but there are other, kinder spirits who haunt Jane as well.  Told by a sort of Greek chorus of ghosts, this book unfolds subtley and elegantly.  A wonderful read for fans of Alice Hoffman, Brunonia Barry's Lace Reader, and A. S. Byatt’s Possession.

Clariel: The Lost Abhorsen Cover Image
$18.99
ISBN: 9780061561559
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 Days
Published: HarperCollins - October 14th, 2014

Clariel is a capable, strong-minded young woman who would just as soon fend for herself in the quiet, green world of the Great Forest - a challenging goal, since her parents have moved the family to the city of Belisaere, where politics reign supreme and it turns out there's a Free Magic creature afoot.

A fellow Phoenix Books bookseller has praised Garth Nix for, in Sabriel, writing some of the most original fantasy on the shelves.  Now, Nix has again overcome cliches, this time in the character of Clariel, who is nothing like a damsel in distress.

This prequel to Garth Nix's Abhorsen series can stand alone for readers who haven't yet discovered the series.
