Kari's Picks

After a fateful trip to Vermont, inspired by a comic book, Kari decided to leave the west coast and make this state her home. One can most often find Kari reading at least six books at a time with a good mix of genres in hand. Her favorites tend to feature at least one element of magic, and she loves a good graphic novel. Give her a fresh storyline with a strong female lead and she's happy. Throw in some stunning illustrations and she's over the moon.

Authors of Note (According to Kari): Catherynne Valente, Karen Russell, Neil Gaiman, Kelly Link.
Pictorial-Authors of Note: Faith Erin Hicks, Kelly Sue Deconnick, Gail Simone, Fabio Moon& Gabriel Ba.

As someone who grew up watching both professional wrestling and The Princess Bride, Andre the Giant was definitely a presence in my childhood, looming ominously around the edges. This is probably what drew me to Box Brown’s new biography, which was obviously created with heart and true reverence for both Andre the legend and the man. Featuring stories and anecdotes from individuals who worked with Andre on a professional level, we get just a peek at who the man may have been on the inside, struggling with a death sentence for most of his adult life. Paired with simple yet poignant illustrations, this graphic biography is sure to please.

The book reads like a grandfather sharing his stories with great detail, and offering an introspective look at how those brief moments shaped his thinking and actions for the rest of his life. Drawn with heart, by an oviously true friend and admirer, Guibert would ahve been proud to see what Pulver has done with his memories.

A beautiful blend of mythology, story, and old west sensibility. People are saying this is a mash-up of two of my personal favorite series: Neil Gaiman's The Sandman and Garth Ennis's Preacher, and they are not lying. This graphic novel is the product of a very talented team of writers and illustrators, and I cannot wait to see what else they create.
