Priestdaddy: A Memoir Cover Image

Published: Riverhead Books - May 2nd, 2017

I didn't get far in Priestdaddy before realizing I needed to take a vow of sorts: I could not allow myself to read it in public, to spare strangers my wild guffaws, or even at home around loved ones, to keep myself from reading passage after passage to them. Every sentence shines with a poet's attention to detail, and although Lockwood's poems are surreal (see my review for Motherland Fatherland Homelandsexuals), her memoir may be even stranger — after an unforeseen medical expense leaves Lockwood and her husband broke, they must move back in with her parents, a carnivorous Catholic priest obsessed with guns and guitars and a mother who speaks almost exclusively in prognostications of mortal peril. More than just a funny book about an eccentric family, Priestdadddy is also meditation on the modern church: its scandals, its politics, and its peculiarities. It is, quite simply, fantastic, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is, quite simply, fantastic, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Published: Tor Books - February 7th, 2017

I want to visit Amberlough! The sense of place that Donnelly is able to conjure is incredible — especially since she's writing about a city that doesn't exist. Amberlough is a spy thriller set in the last hedonistic days of a glittering city, the shadow of a far-right One State Party threatening to ruin everything.

Published: Del Rey Books - March 1st, 2016

Uprooted is a book about relationships: between a methodical master and his slapdash apprentice; between two best friends that support each other when alone they would fail; and between the individual and her community, no matter what distance may separate them. Like the magic within its pages, Uprooted derives its greatest strength from these connections.

Patricia Lockwood's poetry is strange, but not for the sake of strangeness. Rather, her prose is defamiliarizing, a deconstruction of normative American culture. To me, no other modern poet's voice is as fresh and exciting.
