Eliza's Picks

Eliza loves books. She grew up getting in trouble for reading when she was supposed to be sleeping, eating, and playing soccer. She always has a separate bag for books when traveling, which means less legroom in cars traveling across the country, and has accepted that ditching clothes to allow extra room in suitcases for books is a necessary sacrifice. Her favorite stories are ones that inform, entertain, and that you can’t stop thinking about long after the last page has been turned.

Like the free dives the author writes about in the book, this story begins on the surface. Through fascinating and terrifying experiences from being an observer at free-diving competitions, to swimming with whales, the reader is gradually brought deeper and deeper into the ocean. Every sentence seems to contain a fact, which usually dooms a book to being a dry read; however, the style of writing is so engaging and the facts so unexpectedly bizarre that it grabs you right from the start.

Great for: readers of Outside Magazine, fans of Nature/Travel writing or anyone who loved The Devil’s Teeth.

Romeo and Juliet are dead, but that’s not the end of the story. For Benvolio and Rosaline, dealing with the aftermath of their cousins’ deaths in Verona has become almost unbearable, and the uneasy truce that exists between the two families seems to be on the verge of collapse. The answer is a marriage that neither of them wants. This novel is grounded in Shakespeare’s world, but you feel like you are behind the curtain, seeing the lives of the characters as if they truly lived. With hints of Much Ado about Nothing and The Taming of the Shrew, it’s at once recognizable and modern, with witty banter and a twisting, unpredictable plot. Great for: YA readers and anyone who loves reimagined classics

They have reached the age to be ‘unwound’, where their organs will be given to donors that desperately need them to survive. Escaping from one society into another still leaves them with little control over their own lives. Provocative and compelling, it combines many of the issues we struggle with and fight over today,  and paints a picture of a possible and not-too-distant future.

Tim Hetherington’s passion as a photojournalist led him to constantly seek out the frontline of  conflicts and war. Driven to tell stories with his photographs, he is unable to pull away from the fast-paced, high-adrenaline, and dangerous lifestyle that is inherent to a wartime photographer. An insightful and good man, he personally connected with those he photographed. His life reminds us of the positive, lasting impact that one person can make on other’s lives and unfortunately is just one piece of the larger narrative of recent photojournalist deaths in the Middle East.

Claire Randall, a WWII combat nurse on her second honeymoon with her husband,  steps through a ring of stones and travels to 1743 Scotland. With sword fights, no indoor plumbing or modern medicine, and an evil British officer trying to figure out who she really is, she has her work cut out for her if she wants to return to the 1940’s. A heroine that is intelligent and multi-dimensional draws you into the book, and the dialogue as well as the attention to historical detail connects you to the vivid characters in the 1940’s and 1740’s. You are immediately immersed in a world that you never want to leave or put down- it is historical fiction at its best.
