Flying Blind: One Man's Adventures Battling Buckthorn, Making Peace with Authority, and Creating a Home for Endangered Bats Cover Image

ISBN: 9781603585200
Availability: Special Order
Published: Chelsea Green Publishing Company - August 23rd, 2013

More than just a good book about bats and one mans fight to save them,
but a book about how his efforts in helping bats led to surprising and
often humorous twists and turns in his life. Those flying creatures
managed to open some doors to the author's past which in turn seemed to
fuel his resolve to make his 150 acres of land part of a larger purpose.
An entertaining book for nature lovers and story tellers alike.

ISBN: 9781442444928
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 Days
Published: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers - May 14th, 2013

Winger is a difficult book to describe. It manages to be smart, funny, and heartbreaking all at once. Ryan Dean West is a bit of a jerk: a scrawny, athletic, foulmouthed grade-A jerk at an elite boarding school where he's in good company. Yet he's refreshingly real and raw, and you will find yourself sympathizing with this messed-up teen.

Read this book if

* you are an unrepentant Dead Poet

* you can't get anough of those elite boarding school coming-of-age novels

* glittery heroes make you roll your eyes

I'm not an art person, but this mystery was surprisingly enticing. Shapiro did a wonderful job fabricating a story around the real-life theft, and I learned more about art from this novel than I ever learned in school, and it's something I wouldn't hesitate to read through again.

Their lives weren’t fairy tales. Their morals weren’t perfect. Some were desperate or abused. Others were ingenious and brave. A few were just plain crazy. But they were all real.
